Eva Gjaltema

Eva Gjaltema (Netherlands, 1979) sees photography primarily as a medium for recording time, memories and transience. In her work she refers to universal themes like death, decay, motherhood, the family institution and the influence of history on the present. Her projects go over a longer period of time, using different kinds of media from found footage, (photo)albums, collage, film to analog and digital photography. She switches between documentary projects and more personal projects, where the autobiographical always plays a big part in her work. Gjaltema majored in Cultural Studies at the University of Amsterdam and has a Bachelor Degree in Photographic Design at the Royal Academy for the Visual Arts in The Hague.

Gjaltema about her series Sehnzucht:

‘The title of the works Sehnzucht is a combination of two different words, the German word ‘Sehnsucht’ which means ‘longing for’ and the Dutch word ‘zucht’ which means ‘sigh’. It signifies the two worlds where I am at the moment. Somewhere between Germany and The Netherlands. The series is a personal documentation about the inner struggle of being a mother of a young child.’
